Installing WordPerfect 8.1 on PC-BSD

It is possible to install and run WordPerfect 8.1 for Linux on PC-BSD 8.2.

PC-BSD 8.2 was released in 2011. It includes KDE 4.5.5.

PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD. This page reflects, with modifications, the directions helpfully provided by Leon Goldstein on the Linux Agora site, on how to use Word Perfect 8/Linux with FreeBSD 5.3, accessible here.

Installation procedure

The following directions are for the installation of WordPerfect 8.1 SE, the starter edition, on PC-BSD 8.2.

The debs needed for the installation are:

(1) wpx-free_8.0.78_i386.deb; and

(2)  libc5_5.4.46-15_i386.deb.

The libc5 deb can be obtained here.

PC-BSD 8.2 itself contains libraries sufficient to fulfil the dependencies of WordPerfect 8.1 on libc6 and xlib6g.

The installation procedure is as follows.

1. Using dolphin and ark, extract into a temporary directory, preserving the file structure, the files contained in the data.tar.gz folder inside the libc5 deb.

Then move these extracted files, again preserving the structure, into the following folder:

/compat/linux/

2. Similarly, using dolphin and ark, extract into a temporary directory, preserving the file structure, the files contained in the data.tar.gz folder inside the wpx-free deb.

Then move these extracted files, again preserving the structure, into the following folder:

/compat/linux/

3. Then, as root in a terminal, give the following commands in turn.

brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/usr/lib/wp8/wpbin/*

brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/usr/lib/wp8/shbin10/*

cd /compat/linux/lib

ln -s ld-2.9.so ld-linux.so.1

4. Then edit the following file:

/compat/linux/usr/bin/xwp

by adding

/compat/linux

in front of all the paths referred to in the file.

5. Finally, as root in a terminal, give the following command:

/compat/linux/usr/lib/wp8/shbin10/wpfi

Note that further steps will be necessary to print with WordPerfect 8.1 after installation.
