Installing WordPerfect 8.0 or 8.1 on Libranet 3.0

(v 1.4 - 04/018/05)

[This page was kindly provided by Leon A. Goldstein, its author. It includes contributions from Erik Wessman.

Although Libranet is no longer available, the information may be useful by way of analogous application to other distros.]

1. This how-to explains how to install Word Perfect 8 and 8.1 in Libranet 3.0. This procedure does not apply to earlier Libranet releases: 1.9.x and 2.0.

2. WP8 LINUX VERSIONS

WordPerfect 8 is a native Linux application.

WordPerfect 8.0 was sold as a retail package with personal and network versions. The WP8.0 personal edition is also included in the WordPerfect for Linux Bible by Harris and Zijleman. This version installs with a script.

Download versions of WP8.0 are available in TAR and RPM packages included with some older Linux distributions, e.g. Caldera 2.2, 2.3, and SuSE 6.x. The download version does not have a font installer and also lacks some features in the full version. Only the network version of WP8 has a classic text-based interface option.

Word Perfect 8.1 is a later version that was originally bundled with Corel Linux. The version included with Corel Linux deluxe version has more fonts than the "light" version included with the standard version.

For a detailed description of the WP8 versions see
http://linuxmafia.com/wpfaq/

All versions of WP8 require installing the WordPerfect Compatibility Package either during initial installation of Libranet 3.0 or after installation using Xadminmenu. The WordPerfect Compatibility package is at the end of the package listing. WP8.1 (the version included only with Corel Linux) can be installed without the compatibility package. Installation will be simpler, however, if the WP8 Compatibility package is installed.

WARNING: Make sure CUPS is installed and working before attempting to install WP8.1.

3. INSTALLING WP8.0 PERSONAL OR DOWNLOAD VERSION

3a. If using the download version, copy and untar the tarball in a temporary directory.

3b. If installing WP8 Personal Edition from a CD, as root, edit /etc/fstab and add "exec" (without quotation marks) to the CDROM line:

/dev/cdrom /cdrom ISO9660 defaults,user,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

3c. Open a terminal and execute cd /cdrom. Execute ls and look for the installation script "install.wp." Execute ./install.wp

NOTE: if you do not edit /etc/fstab to include "exec" you will need to copy the "install.wp" script and execute it from your hard drive. Adding "exec" lets you install programs directly from the CD.

3d. Ignore the warning "kernel 2.6.11 not certified" and select "yes." WP8 will then install normally. You will need to enter the registration number during the installation. WP8 must start using the full path to the executable; if you installed WP8 in e.g. /usr/wp8, the full path is:
/usr/wp8/wpbin/xwp.

NOTE: the download version of WP8 does not require a registration number for initial installation. This version will run for 30 days before it needs a registration number.

If you use a KDE desktop icon, you do NOT need to check the "start in terminal" box as with KDE 2.x. A WP icon is already installed in Libranet. This installation will only provide a few fonts. Owners of WP8 Personal Edition can add fonts using the font installer utility. The download version lacks the font installer utility and cannot install additional fonts.

3e. Printing: Install CUPS or Turboprint. Name the printer, e.g. lp.
Test your printer before setting up WP8's printer.

3f. Create a symlink for /etc/printcap. To do this, execute as root:

ln -s /var/run/cups/printcap /etc/printcap.

3g. Set up WP8 printers for each user as usual, but add in the "Lpr Options" box : -oraw. Select lp as the printer destination. (See screen shot for example.) If you cannot find your printer model listed, see Section 7d.

4. INSTALLING WP8.1 in Libranet 3.0

WARNING: You should install and configure CUPS before WP8. 1. Installing WP 8.1 before CUPS may prevent CUPS from installating.

4a. Perform this installation as ROOT.

4b. Locate and install the required Debian packages.

The Debian packages are located in:

CLOS 1.0: /dists/corellinux-1.0/corel/binary-i386

CLOS 1.2: /dists/corellinux-1.2/corel/binary-i386/editors and /dists/corellinux-1.2/corel/binary-i386/text

4c. Copy the following Debian packages from the Corel Linux "deluxe" or "standard" installation CD to a temporary directory, e.g. wp8debs:

fonts-16_1.0-5.deb

fonts-69_1.0-4.deb (Not included with WP8.1 "light" version)

fonts-115_1.0-4.deb (Not included with WP8.1 "light" version)

wp-full_8.1-12_i386.deb

wp-manual_8.1-3_i386.deb (Not included with CLOS 1.2 Deluxe update)

4d. Open a terminal and cd to your temporary directory (e.g. cd wp8debs), and execute:

dpkg --force-overwrite -i *

NOTE: There are duplicate fonts in two of the fonts Debian packages (fonts-16 & fonts-115) and copyright and changelog files in wp8-full and wp8-manual packages. This will prevent one or the other package from installing and setting up unless the --force-overwrite switch is used.

This will complete installation of the WP-full and fonts DEB package(s).

WARNING: Do NOT install the type1inst DEB from the CLOS distro in Libranet. Libranet has a version of typ1inst already, and it works. The version in CLOS will not set up. It is not needed, so don't install it.

5. (OPTIONAL) ENABLING WP8.1'S INCLUDED SUPPORT LIBS.

5a. WP8.1 does not need all of the libs required by the script-install and free versions of WP8.

Only if you do not have or want the WP8 Compatibility package installed add these steps:

5b. Install packages type1inst and its dependency groff from the Libranet 3.0 distribution. These are not in the default installation.

5c. Using a text editor open the file etc/ld.so.conf and add the line:

/usr/lib/wp8/wpbin

5d. Save

5e. Run ldconfig

6. COMPLETING THE FONTS INSTALLATION AND SETUP OF WP8.1

Ignore the errors concerning libc5 while executing the following steps.

6a. Execute

/usr/lib/wp8/shbin10/wpfi

This will take a few seconds. There is no report.

NOTE: this creates the file /usr/lib/wp8/shlib10/wp.drs. Do not omit this step; WP8.1 will not run otherwise.

6b. (Optional) This procedure protects the wp-full Deb and the support libs installed with the WordPerfect Compatibility Package from being automatically changed by updating with apt-get.

In a terminal as root or SU type and execute the following commands:

echo "wp-full hold" | dpkg --set-selections

echo "libc5 hold" | dpkg --set-selections

echo "xlib6 hold" | dpkg --set-selections

echo "xlib6g hold" dpkg --set-selections

echo "xpm4.7 hold" | dpkg --set-selections

You can verify the results of this by finding the packages in Kpackage.

The third line "Status" in package properties should read:

"hold OK installed"

Also see /var/lib/dpkg/status

6c. Make a desktop icon. The execute is xwp. You don't need the full path since the executable xwp is copied to /usr/bin. WP8.1 does not need to have "run in terminal" checked. A WP icon is included in Libranet 3.0.

6d. Printing: (CUPS installed.) After making CUPS printers, create a symlink /etc/printcap by executing as root:

ln -s /var/run/cups/printcap /etc/printcap

6e. Use the WP8.1 printer setup to create a printer definition. Set up WP8.1 printer(s) for each user as usual, but add in the "Lpr Options" box:

-oraw.

Select lp as the printer destination. (See screen shot for example.)

For obtaining and installing additional WP8 drivers see Sect. 7d.

7. POST-INSTALLATION ISSUES

7a. FILE CONVERSION

The WP8 file conversion utility does not work owing to the UNIX "1 billion second bug." If you need to import MS Word documents go to

http://olivier.pk.wau.nl/%7Evalentyn/wp8fix/ or http://www.linuxmafia.com/pub/linux/apps/ and select wp8filtrixfix.tar.gz to download a small (10 KB) patch.

Execute

tar -xvzf

on the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions provided.

See http://www.linux-sxs.org/utilities/wp8word.html for a discussion of the file conversion bug and its fix.

7b. WHEELMOUSE SCROLLING

You can create a simple script to start WP8.x with scrolling enabled.

Install package imwheel_1 from previous Libranet distributions or download from Debian.org.

In root, use Kedit or the like and write:

#!/bin/sh

imwheel -k

xwp

Save as /usr/bin/wp8 and give it user permission:

chmod 755 /usr/bin/wp8

The above script is for WP8.1. For WP8 download or Personal Edition the third line will need the full path to the xwp executable. The first time WP8 is opened, you may have to left-click the mouse within the document to activate scrolling.

7c. PRINTER NOT LISTED

If your printer driver is not listed and you cannot get another to work, try using the WP8 "passthru postscript" printer driver. This will have inferior type appearance and may run much slower on some printers. You will not have printer hardware fonts available.

(DO NOT use -oraw (lpr options) with passthru postscript.)

7d. OBTAINING AND INSTALLING UPDATED WP PRINTER DRIVERS

If you printer is not listed among the available WP8 printers, you can download and install drivers from
http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/#printer

These drivers are for the DOS version of WP, but are also used by the Linux versions. Download the self-extracting archive file, and extract it with the command

unzip -L <filename>.exe

Rename the <name>.all file to <name>.us.all and copy it to your /usr/lib/wp8/shlib10/ directory (WP8.1) or ~/lib/wp8/shlib10 directory in the WP8 install path. Note the insertion of "us" before the file suffix ".all"

7e. UNSATISFACTORY PRINTER OUTPUT

If you have problems with certain format and font options, try using the graphic print option:

Print > Output Options > Formatting Options > Print Document Graphically

7f. EXPORT A .WPD DOCUMENT AS PDF

WP8.0/8.1 can create a PDF file indirectly. To make or convert a .wpd file to PDF:

1. Create a WP8 Passthru Postscript printer.

2. Select '' disk'' as the destination.

3. Print the file to disk, using the Passthru Postscript to disk printer.

4. Convert the resulting file (which is a PostScript file) to PDF with the command "ps2pdf" (without the quotation marks):

e.g. ps2pdf myfile.dsk

If the above procedure does not output a correct rendition of the original .wpd file, repeat the print to disk step and select "Print Document Graphically" in "Output Options."
